What causes bedwetting?

It is important for you to learn all you can about bedwetting and the best way to do this is by talking to your doctor. They can help you to understand why you wet the bed and tell you lots of ways to overcome it. All of them take time, and unfortunately, they don't all work for everyone - but your doctor can help you find out what's best for you.

Doctors say kids wet the bed for lots of reasons

  • Sometimes bedwetting runs in the family. If your mum, dad, aunt or uncle wet the bed at night when they were children, this may explain why you do.
  • Some kids don't make enough of a certain hormone to tell their kidneys to slow down and stop making so much urine at night.
  • Other children whose bladders have not grown as fast as the rest of their bodies cannot hold enough urine to make it through the night.
  • In some children, the bladder muscle called the 'sphincter' may not be strong enough to stay closed - especially at night.
  • There are some children who sleep really heavily and they don't wake up when their bladder is full.
